Is it OK if I already have a Gmail account?
Sure. Google Apps at ISU is totally separate from regular Google.Google Apps allows you to send and receive Gmail (Google email) using your @isu.edu email address--and no ads either! Basically, you now have two gmail accounts.
How much storage space do I have in Gmail?
This number is always increasing, but right now it's over 7GB. (Yup, that's a LOT!) And your attachments can be up to 25 MB.
Can I use other email programs to access my Google Apps at ISU email?
Yes--but we hope maybe you'll switch and use Google Apps to access your other email. At any rate, any kind of forwarding, IMAPing or POPing you want to do will need to be set up in your new Google Apps account. We've got links to specific instructions at our google.isu.edu website.
How will I control spam?
Google hates spam as much as you do, so their spam filter is easy to use and very powerful. If spam happens to leak through, just check it and click the "Report Spam" button. You can also check for mislabeled spam by clicking on Spam under the "4 more"dripdown on the left.
What is the Chat box for?
So you can contact people who are online the same time as you and send them instant messages. Gmail also saves a copy of each chat you have under the "4 more" link, just above the Chat box.
What is a conversation in gmail?
When you send someone an email and they reply--you've started a conversation. And rather than letting those fill up more and more space on your inbox page, Gmail groups them all together under one subject line with the name of the two people on the line and a number in parenthesis right after that. The number tells you how many messages are in that conversation. And, a conversation can involve more than just 2 people. It can be between as many people as you sent your email out to.
How can I organize my email without any folders?
Google uses labels, not folders. This means you can attach more than one label to any email you receive. So your email from Uncle Larry about getting tickets to your concert can be stored under your "Family" label and your "Music" label. Then you can archive it (which removes it from your main page), but still pull it up under either of those two labels.
How come my ISU email isn't forwarding to my favorite email account anymore?
When we switched to Google Apps, you basically got a brand new email account--with your same old ISU email address. You'll need to set up your forwarding all over again in Google Apps. Or better yet, tell your other program to forward to Google Apps instead.
Can I transfer my address book and contacts over to Google Apps?
Yes...and no. You can certainly transfer your contacts, but you can't transfer any mailing lists or groups you've set up. Instructions for moving just the addresses are located at google.isu.edu under "Things to Do Later." It's not too tough.
Where'd my old emails go?
If you had old email stored on the legacy ISU server and did not move it as instructed before December 31, 2009, it is no longer accessible.
My friend's Gmail page looks a lot different than mine. How'd she get that cool background?
Google offers lots of different backdrop styles (this IS Google, after all), and they're easy to set up. Just click on Settings in the upper right of your Gmail page, then choose the "Themes" tab from down on the far right. Click on the style you want and it's instantly applied. (There's even a "random" option that changes your background...at random!)
